You’re probably familiar with the space of Blind Lady Tavern. For decades it’s been the Jury Room, until it was revamped into, well, the Jury Room under Liz Lessner’s ownership. After it closed, the space was briefly home to the 1831 Tavern, but that soon went under and the Blind Lady Tavern took its place. The Tavern initially specialized in cocktails (they still do), but the food menu has been slowly expanded until… Sunday brunch.
If you knew the Jury Room, you’ll find the decor is much the same: that old-time tavern feel, lots of wood, chandeliers, tin ceiling, old wallpaper. It feels a little brighter because they uncovered one window, and there’s still the patio out front.
We got right down to business with brunch. I found Fat Head’s Shakedown Stout, which was smooth although a tad bitter.
There are other brunch drinks to be had as well, like a Bloody Mary or a mimosa. Blind Lady excels at cocktails (owner Seth Laufman was just named one of the 2016 Tastemakers in Columbus Monthly) and these certainly didn’t disappoint.
The brunch menu covers a lot of ground, with a few dishes you don’t normally see.
We started with an order of the donuts, which come hot and crispy, with a sweet and caramely anglaise.
There’s also a house-made sausage that has a nice little kick to it.
The biscuits and gravy. Chunky gravy, very nicely seasoned. Comes with two fried eggs, which were a little overdone.
This is Will’s photo of his French toast: a couple slices of brioche served with maple syrup. He gave it the thumbs up.
Hunter’s Eggs: two eggs baked with parmesan and mushrooms, served with toast and a side salad. Again, the eggs were a little overdone, but the mushrooms and parmesan together made a great sauce. Good for dipping that brioche toast into.
And finally, the poutine with potatoes, cheese curds, a little gravy, and fried eggs. We added the short rib to it – very tender, very recommended.
We’re excited to head back to Blind Lady for lunch, dinner, and drinks, and there’s more to explore on the brunch menu. If you haven’t been yet: add it to the list!
