Last month the Columbus Dispatch sent me on assignment to check out Standard Hall in Short North – take a look at my review right here!
I know the space at 1100 North High holds a lot of memories for people, as the former home of Stache’s/Little Brother’s. When we moved to Columbus it was still Little Brother’s, and we saw exactly one concert there: Over the Rhine on the first night of their Snow Angels tour.
The space extends far back from High Street, and the restaurant owners have converted it into a hip industrial space for lunch, dinner, brunch, and drinks, complete with natural wood, big fixtures with Edison bulbs, multiple patios…
…and a Bloody Mary bar!
Standard Hall has become known for their Bloody Mary bar, which is about as extensive as it comes. You order it at your table, and the server gives you a slip with your selected liquor. You take that to the back bar and hand it to the bartender. Once they give you your glass, you start in on the process. First, select from mild, verde, or spicy mixes – there are even little cups so you can sample them first.
Then you visit the containers of cold garnishes: pickles, cauliflower, olives, cheeses, deli meats, bacon, the list goes on and on. The last stop is a set of hot chafing dishes with a server on guard. They’ll help you to fried cheese curds, onion rings, smokies.
By the time you’re done, you’ve got a glorious monster creation that fellow brunchers will want to take photos of as you stroll proudly back to your table.
It truly was a work of art.
We ordered up a collection of sweet and savory dishes from the brunch menu.
I can’t resist Nashville style hot chicken, and I’ve had some pretty solid hot chicken sandwiches at Standard Hall, so the Nashville hot chicken biscuit was an automatic order. It’s a giant piece of chicken with a nice crust to it. You can order it mild or hot – get the hot. It’s slathered with a spicy honey and a chipotle mayo, which soaks into the biscuit.
Standard Hall features a small skillet of hash brown as a side. The fun part is that you can customize them with cheese, veggies, meats, coney sauce, you name it. Or you can order it All The Way with almost everything on top of it. I always prefer hash browns over home fries, and while these weren’t quite as crispy as I like they, they were still pretty fun.
The cheddar biscuit and chorizo gravy is pretty solid. It’s topped with a fried egg. The gravy has a nice little kick to it – I honestly wanted more – and the biscuit is decently soft, although the gravy and the runny egg help by soaking into it.
To end on a sweet note, we ordered the cinnamon French toast crunch sticks. They weren’t as much sticks as they were slices of French toast cut into strips, but with the sweet cereal crust it was pretty fun.
Brunch can be a busy affair at Standard Hall, but fortunately they have the room for it. And even on the bustling Saturday the food came out quickly.
It’s nice to see this building given new life. If you’re making the brunch rounds in Columbus, I’d keep Standard Hall on your list!
