On assignment last month for the Dispatch, we found ourselves finally checking out Harvest Moon in the adorable city center of Canal Winchester. (You can check out my review here.)
Harvest Moon occupies a long restaurant space at the heart of Canal Winchester. (Fun fact, it’s just down the road from their railroad depot.)
The cafe features a long, brick wall with local artwork, a small bar, a good collection of tables, and a patio along High Street.
The place was hopping when we arrived, although they quickly found a table for our group of six. But they were so busy that, when we first ordered coffee (from nearby Rost Coffee in Chilicothe) they brought it out in paper cups. Eventually, though, they swapped out the cups for some of their great ceramic mugs.
Kudos to their Bloody Mary. Served in a mason jar with a seasoned rim, it was nicely balanced, with a hint of spice.
We sampled a good portion of their brunch menu. The Heavenly Hotcakes are of the lemon/ricotta variety, so they’re tangy and fluffy, and served with a little lavender-infused maple syrup.
Like many of the dishes on their menu, the pancakes come with a side of turkey bacon. Although my preference is for traditional pork belly, these strips are smoky, crispy, and a little sweet.
The house hash balances the flavors and textures of savory brussels sprouts, peppers, onions, garlic, and provolone with sweeter notes from apples and sweet potatoes. The over easy eggs were appropriately yolky, and the whole dish comes together very well.
One of the more notable offerings is the Sunny Side Pierogi: two potato-filled pierogi topped with bacon, caramelized onions, tomatoes, peppers, sunny side up eggs. I thought the pierogi tasted familiar, and sure enough: they came from Sophie’s. I’m know pierogi connoisseur, but Sophie’s are easily the tops in town.
The whole concoction is heavily drizzled with a cilantro lime sour cream, and it’s a delight. Next time, I may add the optional chorizo…
The three-egg omelets are a hit, too. Pretty filling, and cooked well without getting dried out. You can customize them with veggies, mushrooms, black beans, a variety of cheeses, and bacon, sausage, chorizo, or salmon.
Simple but solid breakfast burrito, loaded with eggs, potatoes, bacon, veggies, provolone, and a roasted garlic aioli. It’s wrapped in a cheddar jalapeno tortilla that imparts just a bit of spice.
And last there’s the traditional breakfast with eggs to order, potatoes, turkey bacon, and toast with jam.
There are a few more items we missed this time around: French toast, steel cut oats, breakfast tacos, and a burger. Next time!
With the weather getting nicer, Harvest Moon will be able to make good use of their patio.
They also serve lunch and dinner, offer full bar service, and serve house-made juices and smoothies. And it’s certainly kid-friendly!
