Cap City Diner is one of the mainstays of Cameron Mitchell’s portfolio, ranking up there with one of his oldest restaurants. This month the original location in Grandview is celebrating 25 years in business (there are spots in Gahanna and Dublin now, too), and the folks at the restaurant group kindly invited us in for a taste of brunch. Oddly enough, we’ve been there for dinner (with classics like their meatloaf and towering chocolate cake) but never for brunch.

Per COVID standards, Cap City has spaced out seating throughout the restaurant, required masks when not at your table…

…while also making great use of their spacious covered patio, which opens to the outdoors. We requested a table out there, as is our custom these days.
We started first with a bevy of beverages: coffee, iced tea, pop, pink lemonade.

At brunch they serve a sweet version of their hot rolls, drizzled with icing and dusted with cinnamon sugar.

I sipped a chipotle Bloody Mary as well. Bloody Marys aren’t typically my go-to, but I enjoyed this one: rich, zesty, not too heavy.
We kicked things off with a couple tastes from their starters menu. The hot and sour calamari is tossed with crisp veggies and seasoned just like hot and sour chicken at a Chinese restaurant. An interesting take on the typical calamari appetizer.
We also enjoyed the blue cheese potato chips, Cap City’s take on a plate of Ohio nachos, drizzled with alfredo sauce, bleu cheese crumbles, and chives. Hard not to like.

And now on to our entrees… Beth tried a perennial favorite, the smoked salmon and bagel, letting you assemble the meal from an everything bagel with whipped cream cheese, fresh greens, red onion, tomatoes, and capers. Nice addition of a deviled egg on the side.

Our 9yo Owen has learned to love eggs benedicts, so he selected their classic benedict, built on an English muffin with rosemary ham and hollandaise. Side of decently browned potatoes.

Our 12yo Will is the sweet tooth, and he dove into the French toast with a side of candied bacon.

And I was leaning protein-heavy, so the diner-style steak and eggs was the pick for me. All very pleasing: beef tenderloin cooked to order (I leave it to the chef, who chose medium rare) plus potatoes, over medium eggs, Texas toast. Just like the other dishes, it was easy to love.

Cap City underwent some renovations a couple years back, so it’s got a fresh look but still retains the details of a classic upscale diner. I look forward to the days when we can safely crowd into diner booths with friends and family once again.

Thanks for another lovely meal and wonderful service, Cap City team!
